Re: What To get done at a first vet visit?

Admittedly I haven't had those done before last time my birds went, they were weighed, had their heart rates checked (try to get your bird used to a stethoscope at home or their heart rate may be off the charts at the vets), they had their eyes checked, their preen glands looked at and were offered a blood test for liver function check.

The blood test is good to have done as it will tell you if the bird has an infection by the white blood count, it will also tell you about nutrient levels which are useful in adjusting their diet, the gram stain might be useful or might not. The blood panel will not tell you about liver function unless the liver is ready to fail, for that you need a bile acids test and that is rather expensive, but it is the only one that can tell you about liver function early enough to effectively treat it.

I don't bother with fecals unless there is something consistently wrong with it for a particular bird BUT I've had many birds for many years so I've accumulated a bit of experience in poopology. CBC is essential because that is the one that tells you if there is a bacterial infection somewhere. Chem panel is always good to have because, even if the bird is young and healthy, it's very useful for control as a base line. Bile acids is, as Wolf said, the only test that tells you if the liver is working well but, if the bird is a young one, you can wait a couple of years to get it done. On the other hand, if the bird is a bit older, has had a bad diet, plucks or has any other health issue it's better to have it done.
