Is this normal?

Postby Sofija » Tue Dec 22, 2015 4:28 am

I have notice some red dots on my bird's head. He seems normal, eating and energy.
He is young 3,5 months I think he is not molting, there are no feathers in the cage.
Is this normal in his age or is a sign of illness?

I can give you my first thought. To me it looks like she and the cage bars are not getting along. Some birds tap the cage bars but others try to get through them. Just my thought.

I can't really tell from the picture but, if you blow on the spots, do you see a feather that is a brighter red than the others? Because that's what it looks to me from the pix - that he is molting into a brighter face.

I see three spots that look like abrasions which supports what Liz is saying. But I really can't tell more than that because when I enlarge the picture it loose some of its clarity.

That is normal lovies have darker & dull faces when they are babies! and around 4 months old they get their adult colouring which depending on the mutation can birght red. That is normal!

Thank you for replay!
Yes, he likes to eat metal :o Of all his toys he doesn't like anything better than to taste the metal buckle of a single hanging toy, especially his bird hammock, witch he uses not to sleep in, but to clime on. And that's how he is constantly rubbing his head against his cage. By the way his cage is huge, it's a cage more for alexandrine than lovebird :D
Thank you for your prompt response!

Maybe this is better? But I do not see that brighter feather yet...

Wow, THANK YOU I didn't know that. Doesn't say anything about that on the net...
Mine is peach-faced lovebird, but I thought he will get his first molt later.
I really hope you are correct, I was worried that something was wrong :(
I read somewhere they mentioned red mites, I would have been devastated.

Mites are a possibility, but not so much in a bird that is not outside or exposed to outside birds. If their are mites you should be able to see them with a thorough examination with a good magnifying glass, especially in places where the feathers are thinnest such as the place where the wings join the rest of the body, the arm pits so to speak or near the vent and on the face. For the most part on an inside bird mites are not that common.
I hope that this is helpful to you.

I haven't notice anything, but they say it's hard to see them. I will try with magnifying glass, thank you.
As always you were helpful
