Scarlet Macaw Bleeding?

Postby TheRightAlice » Wed Dec 23, 2015 10:59 pm

So I have an unweaned, 11 week old, Scarlet Macaw. About 4 hours ago, she sneezed and blood got everywhere. She has been acting completely normal, eating solids and her morning feeding went great! I have not fed her tonight, as I am scared to hurt her further. No vets are open any where near me at this time. She is not currently bleeding, she is in her cage being her normal vocal self. Should I feed her, or wait until I can take her to the vet? What do you think could cause this? Also, if I use something and it doesn't hurt my parakeet, should it be safe to use around her as well?

Try giving her the weaning formula in a spoon and see if she will eat it that way as it is safer than risking injuring her with a syringe. Then take her to the vet tomorrow and have the vet teach you the right way to feed her the weaning formula, so that you don't accidently hurt her.
I can't answer the question of using something around your parakeet and it being safe or not around the Macaw as it depends on what you are speaking of.

I do not syringe feed. I cup feed her. She hates the syringe. I mean such things as odor neutralizer. My parakeet never has problems with it, nor did my cockatoo.

I would not be using that product around any bird as many household products like it are toxic to birds and may be the cause of the bleeding in your Macaw.
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=12521 Please read this topic, beginning on the second page of it is a list of plants and woods and foods and near the end is a list of household supplies that are toxic to parrots. This is a very important list to keep on hand as it can save your birds life.
I would still get your Macaw to the vet as soon as possible.
