bugs in pellets

Postby DanaandPod » Thu Dec 24, 2015 1:12 pm

I have a bit of a bug phobia. And, I just realized that my screw cap containers are not bug proof. Pods pellets have some kind of tiny dark and light little bugs. I'm on here distracting a bit before I tend to my plans on Xmas eve. I ran water over them for now... But, I feel a little queezy over it. How could this have happened with plastic and glass containers? Yuck!

It is possible that the bugs didn't come from your home but from the manufacturer. If you think that they came from your home then make sure that you keep the waxed cardboard insert that is in the lid of most jars as that is what actually seals them or you can use canning jars and get the flats and rings that make the lid. The flat has a rubber ring built into it. They will seal enough to prevent bugs from getting into them.

I have taken the plastic lids from like cans of coffee and cut them to fit inside the lids of jars to replace the cardboard inserts that were in them originally. Sometimes it works great.

I use wax paper. It allows the lid to screw on and seals the ring area. I buy their seed from Walmart in the plastic jars. They are sealed and they never have bugs. If they do they have died from lack of oxygen. To protect their food and mine from pantry moths I reuse the jars for all my dry foods. I have collected quite a few jars over the years. The canning jars are a good idea when you are working with smaller amounts.
