Any new recipes??

Postby BabyBird » Fri Dec 25, 2015 10:31 am

Hey, me again :) Anybody got some simple quick recipes that a :gcc: would love to eat, I wanna change her diet a bit and find something a bit more interesting other than seeds(especially sunflower) and pellets... (Because she throws most of it to the bottom of her cage or at me haha :)) :gcc: She's very fussy and I want it to be something quick and easy which she won't waste :)

Good luck on the eating without wasting it 'cause the only parrot that I am aware of that will do that is a stuffed parrot.
You could make a mixture of 1/4 cup each of dry quinoa, wild rice, toasted flax seed ,steel cut oats, pearled barley and whole wheat and then cook this mix until they are about half done and season with a little turmeric, allow to cool to room temperature and give some to your bird.
The thing with food is that unless they have eaten it before they may not touch it until you go through the process of teaching them that it is food and good to eat. However if they do try it they usually love it and it is very healthy for them and is a start on switching them to eating the cooked food that we call gloop. Or you could try soaking some whole wheat bread in 100% unsweetened apple juice. You still have the same issues with it as any other new food if they have not had it before.

I don't use apple juice for the parrots at all because, even when you use only the organic (which you would have to as apples have been at the top of the list of the 'dirtiest' for years and years), they pretty much press the whole apple (meaning, the seeds, too) and 60% of it is made with concentrate from China so, regardless of the brand new regulations the FDA put in 2013, I still don't trust it has low levels of arsenic.

Also, I would not cook the steel cut oats along with the barley or the wheat kernels, I would add them after they are cooked and still hot. The moisture and heat from the cooked grains will soften them just right while, if you cook them, they will become mushy and, I don't know about other people's birds but mine hate mushy.

I cooked her up a small batch and I picked up just the right amounts of each thing to make a small batch and she loved it, she loves mushy things, I guess my parrot isn't the norm :D , sorry pajarita but wolf was right with the recipe, I'll try your altered recipe too, thankyou so much.

And wolf, the reason I wanted less mess is because I just hate mess, I end up cleaning her cage 3-4 times a day to keep the bottom of it clean  I'll just go to the shop now and buy a stuffed one shall I?? Haha joking, I can kinda deal with the mess, as long as I can clean it and t doesn't go on my new carpet

To get her to eat her veggies you can mash them up with her favourite fuit, something sweet like mango, strawberry or grapes. :D
Or for something quick you can buy 'just add water and bake' bird muffin/bread mixes. I havent tried this yet but think it looks great, though it is pretty expensive (makes six normal sized muffins for $10!) I forget the brand our local pet shop sells but you can get like apple and cinnamon muffins, bannana muffins, dried apricot muffing and stuff like that, you can also get harrisons bake at home birdie bread.. that sort of thing. :)
You can make foraging seed bells using seeds & either honey or gelatine and then put in the fridge to set.
Or birdie Iceblocks for a hot day, (freeze fruit).
There also seems to be quite a few good ideas on pintrest https://www.pinterest.com/pin/308496643196255994/
Im not on pintrest but i see allot of cool things on there. :)
