Strange behaviour!! {Quick response pleaseee}

Postby BabyBird » Sat Dec 26, 2015 3:13 pm

My parrot has just started sitting at te bottom of his cage when it's dark, he walks around and just sits there sometimes then climbs back up when he sees me, is this a sign of illness? And she keeps making a regurgitating motion with her head but nothing comes out.. ?? Is this bad?????? :( in the daytime she always sits on her perch fluffed up and does not move, she sits on the highest perch that is taller than me, should I lower this perch? Is she cold?? Is she sick??.. I need some help because she really isn't acting normal.

I can't say for sure but it could be the early signs of illness. the sitting all puffed up and not moving is an indicator. Depending on the age of the bird and the species of the bird sitting on the bottom of the cage could be a nesting behavior or it could be assign of illness. As a general rule if my bird is not acting normally then the first thing to do is to take the bird to the vet if for no other reason than to rule out illness. Birds hide an illness for as long as they can, often until it is too late to save their lives. This is because they are flock animals and since a sick bird endangers the entire flock, the rest of the flock will run then off, which is pretty much a death sentence for a lone bird.
So my recommendation is for you to take your bird in to see his avian vet as soon as you can. If you tell them that you think she is sick, they will get the bird in sooner.

Please let us know what the vet says. We worry about everybody's birds, not only our own!

Do your best to get her in as soon as possible, parrots can hide their illness well, and by the time you see symptoms it can be serious. Have you been weighing her, and if you have has her weight changed?

Not really! Because of the way that they hide their illnesses, a few day could make the difference between a live bird or a dead one. You have a small bird and they can go down in a matter of days and in some cases hours. Believe me, please, I am not trying to scare you or coerce you in any way, but I do not know how sick your bird might be so I am trying to save its life. As I said earlier, I don't know how serious this is, but I know that I would not take the chance, but that is me.

EDIT

At the very least call your avian vet and tell him/ her what your bird is doing and ask about an appointment and go from there. I do worry about other peoples bird quite a lot.

Oh, my dear, please listen to the advice given by Seagoatdeb and Wolf, they are 100% right! With birds, by the time you see symptoms, they've been sick for a long time and feel so bad they can no longer hide them. Please don't wait!

If she is really doing better check to see if she could have zinc poisoning, look to see if any toys have washers or if anything suspicious has been chewed on. I would still go to the vet.
