It is the specific light that occurs at dawn and dusk that sets and resets the internal biological clock that controls the endocrine system that produces the hormones which bring the bird into its reproductive cycle and brings it to an end. The other major factor affecting this reproductive cycle is diet and specifically the amount of protein in the diet. They work together as the sex hormones are produced from the proteins, this is why we consistently speak of a solar light schedule and a low protein diet to reduce the amount of hormones in our birds.
