Deformed toe options?

Well, here I am again.

My parrotlet baby come out of the nest like this. I have no idea how that happened in plain pine shavings.

When she perches, it folds under the other toes as shown, and she puts the weight of her whole foot on it, hence the color. A few weeks now, and the nail/toe color hasn't changed at all. I honestly thought it would fall off in a few days, but no.

I've seen a few birds that lost nails or toes in fights, but not one that has a chronic problem like this. She is not tame, so I can't splint her.

Do I leave her, or should I have a vet take it off so she can sit normally, or any other options?

It could get infected. I would have it removed. The way my Gimpy is twisting his leg to count for 2. I am considering having it removed.

Like my other thread mentioned, i like to go in informed, and it lets me make or agree to decisions faster. Honestly probably my OCD messing with my decisionmaking process.

I really don't think that there are going to be very many options that would prove to be practical for this.

I understand the need to have information, helps us know that the vet knows what S/he is talking about. I agree with the others in that I don't think there are many options so I would just see what your vet thinks- you don't need to make a decision at the time. Ask if they mind you recording the consult or if they can email the options so you can mull it over at home if you think you might forget.

I know what you are saying, but based on the photograph and from what I know, it is really going to come down to whether or not it can be repositioned and not be a dead appendage that serves no function and just gets in the birds way. I personally don't have much hope for that from what I am seeing, so the most likely option to benefit the bird is the removal of the toe.

Yes. You need to know before going to the vet.

My vet put my Calicat down saying she had no hope of recovering from a cronic UTI. A month later I was talking to another vet and found out it was just incontenance and could have been treated. She was so bonded to me that she could feel what I felt. She could even be considered a service cat with all she did while I was ill.

My Lydia had Cushings desease and the vet put me in a panic. Looking back I know what was going on. (She produced too much prednisone.) She was not suffering. I had been on 90 mg for 12 years. Being overheated was normal and all I had to do is stay cool. I had nick named her Dumplin because from above she was just plain round with skinny legs, tail and head. The vet scared me so bad that I went along with his medication for her. She died a terrible death from the meds. If I had let her go on without help she would have been happy to the end. (prednisone in high doses makes you feel bullet proof without any pain.) I loved her so much. She was a Chihuahua guard dog and had a special bark that meant she could see something that she did not understand. (When the AC came on my filadendran would wave around. I finally put it on the floor so she could see it was not alive.)

I did not mean to go on and on but you can tell that my pets were not just my children. They are my best friends and I really miss the ones who died and did not need to.

If you repair the toe to make it close to normal you will be putting your kid through a lot of pain.
I have a cockatiel with no toes on the front of her left foot but she can do anything the others can.

Over the years I have found there is less pain in removing something than fixing it. Know ahead of time what you will do if the vet says this and if he says that.

What about Birds that are born without nails on their toes.Mango my Plum head was born with no nail on two of his toes.
