Red in the Face

I've seen macaws get red in the face, or blush, when they get excited or angry. I saw a pair of 4 month old CAGs that were getting the red tint in the white face, too. One more so than the other. Is this a problem? I don't remember this ever happening to my Gry when she was a baby.

I really don't know for certain, but I would think that this might be an indicator for high blood pressure or possibly a heart condition. I do know that this tends to hold true in humans, but don't know if it has been researched or even documented n parrots. Will look into it more when I get the chance to do so.

You mean the white feathers of the 'mask' are red? Or the skin?

It has to be the skin. One of the blue and golds at the rescue gets a red face when he gets excited.

Are you sure that it's a blue and gold, and not a blue throated macaw? Because from what I've seen, I'm pretty sure blue throated macaws are naturally red around the beak.

Yes, macaws blush but they have 'naked' skin on the sides of the beak which is not the same as an orbital ring and that's the only 'exposed' real skin a gray has on the face and, which, in reality, it's not even wide enough to be called 'orbital ring'.... So, I think that what you see pink is actually the very small and very fine feathers they have on the white 'mask' around their eyes, in which case I would assume they got dyed with something (a toy?).

I think you can see the skin through the fine feathers when they blush. Maybe because they were so young.
