Lorikeet diet.

Postby Chantilly » Tue Jan 19, 2016 11:55 pm

Basically any info you have on this is greatly appreciated.
I know that they need either dry of wet nectar, and daily fruit and veg. Thats all to it?.. really I dont think so.
I am starting to search into this but basicly what everything says that I have found is what I said above. Any help with this is hugely appreciated, Anyone here with a lory?

Diet:

Nectar - a commercial type specially formulated for small species or a mix of baby cereal (lactose-free) and honey, malt extract or molasses, mixed with filtered water, made fresh once or twice daily, making up at least 40 percent of the diet; vegetables and fruit especially apple, pear, orange, cactus fruits and bananas, and one or more daily of: carrot, fresh corn, green leaves; plus dried figs soaked in water for a few hours, spray millet and a small amount of soaked or sprouted sunflower seed and small amount of canary seed.

This is the diet recommended for a Rainbow Lorikeet taken from the World Parrot Trust. I do not have any of this type of parrot and don't really know much other than the amount of these seeds must be kept to a really small amount due to the differences in their digestive tract.

I hope that this helps some.

I found this article (well, blog post) on a lorikeet diet. I hope it helps.

I hope no one here minds birdtricks.com. Some of the information on there has helped me immensely, but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I also hope that no one has problems with it. I am not particularly fond of that site, but I do visit it now and then. If the information is helpful I don't care where it comes from as I am not into politics only in learning about and trying to help our birds.

Politics? I've only ever seen information on birds on that site. Are you sure we're thinking of the same website?

Awesome thankyou, I hadnt seen it before now but it seems like a good site to be looking at.. scrolling through the home page at some of the topics, this is funny :P
Birds eat…and they poop…and then they poop some more. A cockatiel might relieve himself every 15-30 minutes – that’s a lot of relief. Have you ever wondered about the journey your bird’s food takes before it becomes an embarrassing stain on your shoulder?

 That one was written by Patty. She's pretty cool. She runs their Facebook page, and I've had a few conversations with her. She's basically the main blog poster.

Yes politics, as in I like this site to the exclusion of this other one or I like this person more than this other one so I don't listen to anything they say. That type of politics. Same principle as being a staunch republican or democrat and ignoring what the other side has to say.
