Ringneck started to make soup?

Postby Viatrixa » Fri Jan 29, 2016 8:14 pm

:irn: Our ringneck Simo is doing wonderfully. We moved recently and we noticed a positive change in his general behavior and attitude - our new place has huge windows and is very lovely and bright during the day time, even during the winter. He isn't right next to a window, but he most certainly has a very good view and likes to sit on his perch and observe the streets while "singing". His body language is positive & content so perhaps we managed to place his cage in a perfect place?

Though he's developed a strange new habit - that is, making soup. He will take all of his food, carry it to his waterbowl, meticulously chop it up with his beak and drop it in. He then lets it be for a while and will eat out of the "soup" later on, after what ever he put in it has become nice and soggy. It's also really funny to see him take a huge piece of pepper and dunk it in before eating it.

I did some research and found out that this is quite a common thing, so I'm guessing it's not something we should be overly worried about? I did also read that sometimes in nature wild parrots will sip water from tiny reservoirs that have all sorts of plants and such in it. We do change his water when we notice, much to his annoyance. Albeit I'm sure this is relatively harmless I'm wondering if he's trying to tell us something, like if he'd like some actual soup?

I have not noticed this behavior in my small parrots but my Senegal, CAG and Amazon all make soup with some of their food. They usually do this only with the food that is both hard and dry.

Oddly enough he doesn't actually do this with his pellets, seeds or millet. (would make sense if he did) Only with veggies which makes it a little odd. (the veggies are of course fresh and clean). Maybe he just likes his moist food to be even more moist? I was thinking of offering him bird safe smoothies. Bellpeppers are quite moist by default yet he loves to dunk them and then chomp them up. Silly little guy... then again I once said that birds are really aliens who mock us. I'm 99% sure this is somehow the case here. But yeah, I assume this is something I shouldn't worry about too much?

Aliens make more sense than any other explanation. It also explains why they are traning us.

My Rambo :amazon: :amazon: amazed me the first day I had him by dunking a cracker. Of course he lost it to the water. He does not go back for the stuff that falls in. To make sure he has clean water all day I set up a second water bowl farther away from the food.

I can understand why he dunks dry but I have not seen him dunk moist food.

His water bowl is on the other side of his cage, well away from his food bowl. Doesn't seem to deter him! Even today, just this morning I saw him haul some carrots to his water bowl. He dropped it in, then left it, went to have some pellets (Sunday for him is a pellet day - we don't give them to him all too often since they're not very healthy or good), then went back to his water bowl and started to eat the moist carrot. It would make a LOT more sense if he dunked dry stuff in, but nope. One idea I have is that maybe somehow he thinks by dropping veggies in water he is "storing" them for later? One of his favorite perches is that which is near his water bowl and the other higher up in the cage. Maybe it's his way of treasuring his favorite foods?

I even tried asking the little culprit himself. He tilted his head at me and let out a content peep. Therefore I'm afraid to say his response was cryptic and not very informative. Well, changing his water isn't much of a big deal for us but we're now going to try and offer him some form of gloopy food every day. He does receive self made smoothies, gloop, and things like that but not absolutely every day. Maybe if he has some on offer every day, even if just a bit, this might stop?

Funny little guy, I'm certain he is "trolling" both me and my husband in some way!
