Fresh food tray

Postby freecaptive6914 » Tue Feb 02, 2016 8:20 pm

Hi -
The large budgie cage at the pet store had a great way of presenting fresh food: some sort of wire tray that mounted to the side of the cage. The budgies could sit on it, and there were a few vertical spikes on which were speared lettuce, corn on the cob, etc. I would love to get such a thing for my budgie, but I can't find them anywhere!
Any suggestions?

I am sorry I can't help you, I've never seen anything like that. With my budgies, I would just put the greens both up high between the bars and laying on the bottom of the cage (it needs to be dripping wet because they love to rub their bodies on the wet leaves -kind of like taking a bath on them). They are not big on fruits but mine would eat all the veggies but the green beans in the gloop (I would put it on a white paper plate also at the bottom of the cage -they are ground foragers so they instinctively go to ground to eat).

Did the spears have anything protecting the ends because that does sound quite dangerous if not.

Yeah, I thought about that, too. I don't like any pointy thing anywhere in the cage...

In a Facebook group, someone shared a picture o a baby bottle holder, and they stuck fresh fruit/veggies in it for the birds. I think you could do something similar, even if you don't have the spikes.

There are these cuttlebone holders, that really don't work all that well for what they are intended for, probably due to my birds natures. I am going to try them for holding leafy greens. This is what they look like:

The clips are better for greens, Wolf. They sell them as millet spray and/or cuttlebone holders but I use them for the canaries greens, too.

I had both types, and neither worked for cuttlebones for us. I lost both of them at some point in the cage-rearranging process.
