4 month old B&G Macaw sneezing

Postby Salmando9 » Sat Mar 19, 2016 11:33 am

Hello,

Last night when I was getting to bed I noticed my baby 4 month old B&G Macaw sneezing a few times. He stopped but then he just started sneezing again. I looked into his nostril and they seem a little wet. His grip is strong, when he flops his wings it lasts for a while and it seems strong.

Is it ok for him to sneeze? or do you think something might be wrong with him?

Also, I just saw him clean his nose with his toes after sneezing. both sides.

One more thing to mention is that his poop is clean, its not runny or anything.

Please help. your time and help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Your profile information lists you as having an African Grey parrot although it does not list your macaw so I don't know if this is an oversight or what. Regardless of the reason, sneezing in a bird signifies some form of respiratory distress or irritation and in your case if you do in fact have an African Grey then this is the cause of your macaws sneezing if they are in the same room and if you are not running a good ozone free air purifier.

Macaws are extremely sensitive to the dust produced by so called dust birds such as African Greys and cockatoos and due to this they must be kept separately and an air purifier needs to be running in all areas that either bird has access to. This dust is extremely unhealthy for a macaw, talk to your avian vet about this.

Actually dust from dusty birds such as African greys can kill your Macaw especially a blue and gold as they are most sensitive.

Thank you for your responses. I dont have the African grey in the same house. I recently bought my Macaw a week ago. The African grey is in another separate house. I clean the Macaw's cage daily and have him in a room where i run an air purifier and humidifier daily.

Could the dust be in your clothes? From when you are with the African grey.

There is always a reason for a bird to sneeze and it is not a thing that should be occurring very often. Sneezing is normally done in relation to needing to clear the upper airways of things such as dust, although it can also be caused by such things as too little humidity in the air drying out the moist linings of the nasal area. This can also be an indicator of a respiratory infection.

The very first thing to do is to rule out any medical reason for the sneezing. In addition to having the vet check your bird for signs of respiratory issues ,I would check out the humidity in your home as you may need to run the humidifier more often. Humidifiers can be a source of mold in the air so make certain that you clean it thoroughly and use fresh water each time you use it. Also check out the general air quality of your home as the house itself may be a source of mold and or dust, this is especially true of older homes.

I hope you find this useful.
