Mung beans - sprouts

Postby Chantilly » Tue Mar 29, 2016 3:18 am

I know certain beans have toxins and need to be cooked before giving to a bird to make them safe? What about mungbeans,
I just bought Tilly a big back of sprouting seed (It is typically a normal seed mix, only it has mungbeans.) and I was wondering if giving her sprouted beans (Not cooked) would be a problem?
Thankyou :D

As far as I can tell there should be no problem if fed in moderation. 70
5 of its calories come from carbs, probably in the form of sugars and it also provides a high dose of proteins but they need to be balanced with a food that has a complimentary protein profile if it is to provide a complete protein. Here is a link for you http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/veg ... cts/2333/2

I think that with this much protein in them that you might even try them as a treat. I do get a bit concerned when I see a high level of carbs as our birds do not get the amount of exercise that they really should be getting so too many carbs could lead to obesity. I should probably not be as concerned as I get but I am not sure what level of carbs any of our birds should be getting.

Mung sprouts are safe in terms of the toxin but you don't want to give them too much of them because they are very high in iron (5%). I increase protein intake to the birds this time of the year but I do it through hemp seed (complete protein!) and insect protein (virtually no fat or bad cholesterol) as well as sprouted seed (the kind that is sold for canaries so no beans there, everything is teeny tiny so I mix them in their gloop)
