Supplements & Vitamins

Postby beakycheekie » Thu Mar 31, 2016 11:55 am

Hi, I was wondering if anyone wanted to weigh in on the topic of vitamins and supplements?
I am just about to begin the journey of converting my budgies and cockatiels onto a diet of chop in the morning and seed mix in the p.m. They currently just eat seed mix (Eeek, I know, I know!). But, what about additional supplementations? Should I be giving them anything? They are all relatively healthy with no known medical conditions at this point.

I been feeding gloop and raw produce for breakfast with a good seed mix (the larger species get tree nuts, too) for dinner for almost 20 years now and they really do very well on a fresh food diet with seeds and/or nuts for protein.

As to supplements, I use two kinds of vitamin/mineral supplements. One is a powder you put in the water and I use it for the canaries, finches, cardinals and quails because they don't eat gloop, just seed and produce. The other is a powder I sprinkle on top of the gloop and this is what I use for the parrots. I use 1.5 the daily recommended dosage once a week during the winter and 1.5 daily recommended dosage twice a week at the beginning of the breeding season (like right now - and it's only for 4 to 6 weeks out of the year only). The parrots always have cuttlebone available (the canaries, finches, etc get a 99.99% soluble mineral grit once a week as well as the cuttlebone in their cages) and, when they lay eggs, I give the hens a dosage of Calciboost in their water. I've never had a single bird eggbound or even laying a soft-shelled egg.

Ok, I'll look into getting something.
I found this one, what do you think of it? I'm not sure what to look for or what it is that I'm hoping to supplement my birds with so I'm not sure if it's any good or not...

I use (and LOVE) Missing Link for my dogs and cats but not for my birds. I don't like the fact that it has beef liver, soy, ground beef bone and pinto beans -all things I would not feed my birds. I use ABBA's vitamin/mineral supplement for mine.

Ok, that's what I was wondering. Thank you Pajarita!
