Food

Postby Cheri » Thu Apr 28, 2016 6:33 am

I have lived in Costa Rica for a year so I'm not real familiar with where to buy quality bird products yet.
I have not been able to find food pellets for my ring neck parakeet. Most foods consist mostly of seeds and treats.
Does anyone know where I can buy or order here in Costa Rica as it is too costly to have things shipped here from States.
Thank You,
Cheri

I wish that I could help you with this problem, but I live in the states and order my seed mixes online as there are no places locally for me to purchase anything related to birds.

I do not feed pellets to any of my birds, I find them to be too dry and full oy soy products which seems to create reproductive problems in parrots not to mention all of the artificial vitamin/ minerals, preservatives, sugars and other items that I can't even say and can barely even find out what are. So I make a home cooked food for my birds that I feed in addition to fresh raw produce and then seeds in the evening. The home cooked food is called gloop on this forum and usually consists of 4 or 5 different whole grains ( excluding rice due to the levels of arsenic in it), an equal amount of mixed vegetables and a small amount ( 20%) of cooked white beans and lentils. I also give a vitamin/ mineral supplement once a week to ensure that they get enough of them in their diet.

I know that we have a lot of members not living in the USA that face the same problem as yours and hopefully they can assist you better than I can.

I also can't give you an answer on where to get anything in Costa Rica and I don't know anybody who lives there, either, so I can't ask. What I can tell you is that I don't think that pellets are the best option for them (too dry, not enough fiber, etc) because, in the wild, these birds eat A LOT of fruits, buds, etc so I would suggest a gloop heavy on the veggies, lots of fresh fruit and a good quality seed mix for dinner.
