New Intake at Shelter--budgie with nose issue

Postby beakycheekie » Tue May 03, 2016 12:10 pm

Hi everybody. We just had 2 owner surrender budgies come in to the shelter. They need to be vet-checked but I just thought I'd ask around if anyone had any ideas about one of the budgies. One of this little girl's nostrils looks...blown out? I know that sounds weird but it looks like a great big crusty crater (and not the normal flaky girl cere). The other nostril looks normal but the one has an issue. Any ideas as to what that might be?
(I have a couple of pictures but I'm not sure how to size them yet to upload them)

Ok, I think I figured out how to attach a picture of the budgie. Thanks for the help Wolf!

Ok, dont quote me on this, but I was recently searching about respiratory diseases and I am pretty sure I read something about their noses getting clogged like this due to infection. I am not sure if this would be it as it is only in one nostril, but it may be.
I will try to find the page.

As it turned out the blockage was caused by a build-up of mucas (like snot in humans), which had hardend. Her owner had mentioned that she had had a cold about 5 years ago, which was probably the cause. Because of the removal of the blockage, it stimulated the mucas to flow again, so we regularly have to bathe her nose to make sure it does not harden. All her test results were fine and shes a very healthy bird.

My guess reading these would be either that it is just built up mucus or a fungal-bacterial infection, I also read about Scaly leg mites but it looks a lot different and affects the outside of the nose (makes it look bubbley) . I hope this helps, and sending my best best best wishes to your little princess, thankyou for taking her in.

What Chantilly was mentioning is called a rhinolith (it translates into 'nose rock') but I think this looks more like an infection than anything else. I would quarantine that budgie and start treating it with antibiotics and lots of betacarotene food (with budgies that are not used to eating veggies, start with dark leafy greens -they all love greens and the dark ones have lots of betacarotene) because, usually, when respiratories cause this in the nares, it's from lack of vitamin A (an all seed diet would do it).

Thanks for the responses. The vet has determined that it is a bacterial infection and is treating with antibiotics. The budgies are staying with the vet until the one with the infection improves. It'll be nice when they can come back to the shelter to be adopted into a new home! :budgie: :bluebudgie:
