I think she was 'adorning' the truth to make herself look better. What a lack of good bacteria does is allow bad bacteria or fungus to proliferate so a bird that doesn't have any good bacteria in its gut is more liable to get, say, a fungal infection. It can get both a bacterial and a fungal but for bacterial infection to happen, the bird has to be exposed to it -which you can control through strict quarantine, disinfecting, etc- while, because fungus is everywhere, you can't actually isolate them from it. Now, babies do not have a developed immune system and that's why it's so important to feed them the right way (cold formula, not allowing the crop to empty, dirty implements, etc are all causes of fungal infection which is, most likely, the actual cause of death of both of yours), also, good bacteria comes from fresh food so if the babies did not have any good bacteria and caught a fungal infection it was her fault and make no mistake about this.

I wouldnt believe a word that breeder said anymore at this point without seeing all the reports myself, I am so happy you got your money back, but that doesnt make up for the trauma of watching them die. Breeders like her should not be allowed.

I heeded the warning not to read this post by the title. I just can't take animal abuse and I already hate breeders.

This, I am sure, is a good thread and needs to be talked about. Thank you for starting it. Some people just do not know.

AMEN to that! And that's why I think that bird breeding should require a license with annual inspections. Have you looked at CL lately? OMG, baby birds been bred by people who have no business doing it all over the place!

I asked my mom to call her for the necropsy report and she said that the breeder was supposed to call us. She's obviously not going to call us so I guess we're not going to get to see the report.. My mom just doesn't care. Hhh..

I sincerely doubt that your mother doesn't care... She, most likely, has realized that pursuing this is futile.

I'm so, so sorry that you went through this ordeal, and that these poor birds are being subjected to such inhumane treatment at the hands of this breeder. I can't offer you any legal advice, but if you're looking for a rescue that might have birds available for adoption nearby, there's this one:

Sy's Piece of Heaven Sanctuary: http://syspieceofheaven.org/about/

Due to financial difficulties and her current housing circumstances, my sister actually has my late mother's Sulphur-crested 'too boarded there until her situation changes. They're very compassionate and dedicated people. Theirs is a forever home for any and all unwanted birds. According to their website:
Our mission is to provide a safe place for these birds to go when no other options are available. Some of these birds have been abused or neglected, others may have medical issues. We do not offer birds for adoption, but the rescue actively finds suitable homes for parrots that would thrive in a home environment.

So while they don't generally adopt out their birds, they might be able to help you once you're ready to look for another feathered companion.

Feel free to ask any questions; I can always pass them along to my sister and have her ask the director/workers there, and my sister's boyfriend used to work there so he's on good terms with the staff as well. Best of luck!!

Thank you so much! That rescue looks lovely! But I've already found two parrots that I'm interested in. Pretty soon I'm going to be adopting two budgies from a person (on craigslist i think?) that lost interest in them. From what I saw, their living situation was less than fortunate. The owner only had them for a month before they decided to give them to a new home. Which confused me. They were originally from Petsmart ( :( ) and I doubt their owner handled them, so they'll probably be more difficult to tame. I just hope they don't have any health issues. I'll be taking them to the vet for a check up when I get them. To be honest, giving them a better life is more important to me than taming them. I'm very excited to get them! I should be bringing them home this week! :budgie:

Coming to you as a pair is very good for the budgies and although they will still be confused and scared due to being rehomed, they will be a little less afraid as they do have each other for support and comfort during a very trying time in their lives.

While I would, for sure allow them some time to adjust to their new environment, meaning that I would not push for personal interaction for a few days, I would make certain that they see that I am a major part of their new home environment by hanging out in the same room or area as they are in. This will also give them the opportunity to watch and see that I am not going to eat them or otherwise harm them. It also gives me the chance to wander over to their cage and simply place a couple of small pieces of millet or other preferred treat in their dish while telling them what wonderful birds they are. This also works to increase their trust in me.

Especially during the first month or so I would not change their names and even if I don't care for their names to the degree that I feel that I really have to change them I would try to pick something that sounds similar to their current names. This is also a good time to evaluate their diet and begin the process of improving it.

I am sure that you are aware of everything that I have said and don't really need for me to say them but I mean it well.

Budgies are really quite amazing little birds and or often overlooked in terms of intelligence, but they are extremely intelligent and are only limited in learning some tricks due to their size only.
