Moringa oleifera safe as bird perch?

Postby ms pato » Mon May 16, 2016 3:48 am

Moringa oleifera a typical medicinal tree that grows in the tropics... I so far haven't found publications or articles listing it as safe or toxic bird perch. I have seen a commercial product online that is made out of Moringa oleifera leaves for parrot.

Does anyone know if this a safe bird perch? (I have lots in my backyard lol)

Admittedly, I have used this for Adora and I noticed that she likes to eat the bark off the branch. What do senegals in the wild eat though?

I think that you are going to have to use your own judgement on this one, but I do not see anything to suggest that it would be unsafe for them. I have tow links that I have found for you, I actually found several but think that these two are the best ones. The first is from Web MD and everything is pertaining to humans, the second one is from Birds2U and shows birds including members of the parakeet family of parrots eating the leaves. Here are the links:

Due to what I have read about this tree I would love to get some of the seeds to grow this plant in my home, primarily because of my increasing health issues and to see how my birds react to it firsthand. I am very intrigued with this plant, which doesn't happen very often as I am not a plant person. Do you live where I could get you to send me some of the seeds when they ripen, or should I just try and find the seeds online? Thank you very much for bringing this plant to my attention.

[EDIT] Was reading a bit more about this plant and the only thing that I have found that could be considered bad in any way is that you want to avoid using the root or anything made from the root as it contains a toxic substance in the root that appears to be only in the root.

If I am to use my own judgement, i'd say it's safe because Adora is from the wild and only eat foods she recognises (she eats the Moringa bark off the perch). I'm still battling with changing her diet, I have been following your advice from a previous thread. It seems to work but then she just taste it and drop it to the floor, wipes her beak and that's the end.

Also, some beautiful, large and very verbose wild birds with long orange beaks and very long beautiful tail feathers which has streaks of white come poking into cut branches with their beaks. I still don't know exactly what they eat from the tree.

Thank you for the links you provided, it was super helpful. I live in northern Nigeria, it's the wet season here so there are supple amount of seeds just laying everywhere from the tree. I should be able to post some to you but it may take a while to get to you. I'd advice you check on amazon or anywhere else reliable first. It really takes such a short time to grow and it's beautiful. The uses are endless.
