My Parrot died suddently - Getting a necropsy tomorrow

We made a big step towards that here in Ohio. Dick Goddard, wonderful animal activist, has finally gotten a law passed that says that mistreatment or irresponsible action that hurts a companion animal is a Felony 5!

On May 19th, 2016 I lost only love and my 1st baby DINO. Dino was a beautiful Rainbow lorikeet. We had a heart to heart relationship. He and I were soulmates. Dino was only 6 years old. He was my everything. My love and my treasure.
It's has been now 80 Days since he left me to go to the rainbow bridge. The final and full necropsy report is here. I have post it on Dino's Facebook page. I wanted to share it with you other parrot owners for educational purposes. Please keep care of your babies. They really need us.

Again, my condolences on your loss. It's real hard to take good care of them, no doubt about it! And, the fact that species that have such specialized diets are been bred as human pets without educating the prospective owner in advance is a crime and a heartbreak waiting to happen...

Once again, I must say that I am so sorry for this loss. I don't have anything other than this to say that can actually express my feelings on this as words alone are not nearly enough.

I read the autopsy report and what you said in regards to the bird having had access to your tomato plant and I do think that it is worth mentioning that while tomatoes are ok for birds the green parts of the tomato plant are toxic to them. Tomatoes are of the nightshade family as are potatoes and birds should not be allowed to have access to the plant.

Yes, you are correct, Wolf, all green parts of the tomato plant are toxic but it seems to me that the bird's death was caused, most likely, by either a diet too high in fat and protein or some genetic metabolic defect that impaired its ability to metabolize fat and protein adequately (liver with fatty nodules, cardiovascular system showing signs of having been severely compromised, etc). But, taking into consideration that the bird was a lorry, which requires such a difficult diet, I would tend to believe it was the diet that did it. All species that have super specialized diets end up dying young in captivity...

I am new to this forum and have just read your post on Dinothelorri. I cannot imagine the pain you have been going through but you can take solace in remembering all the happy times you had together. My heart goes out to you and I hope the pain gets less as time goes on.

I am not saying that the tomato plant was the cause of this death. The necropsy did mention some green plant material in the crop and the OP wondered if it might have been from her tomato plant that the bird had free access to. This is the reason for my posting about the tomato plant, not to say that it was the cause, but to remind others that the green parts of this plant are toxic so don't allow their birds to eat it.

I am not experienced enough to read a necropsy report and understand it well enough to say what the cause of death is when it is not clear about it .
