I was at a bit of a loss too, about the necropsy. I was also not sure what diet the lorikeet was actually eating. All I *WAS* sure about was my sympathy for the bird and the person, whose pain was just so palpable. I'm glad there is a place like this... to give support and sympathy.

Wolf wrote:I am not saying that the tomato plant was the cause of this death. The necropsy did mention some green plant material in the crop and the OP wondered if it might have been from her tomato plant that the bird had free access to. This is the reason for my posting about the tomato plant, not to say that it was the cause, but to remind others that the green parts of this plant are toxic so don't allow their birds to eat it.

I am not experienced enough to read a necropsy report and understand it well enough to say what the cause of death is when it is not clear about it .

Yes, they did mention the green material in the crop but they also mention that the rest of the entire digestive tract was empty so, even if had eaten tomato leaves, they had not been broken down yet (the crop is pretty much an enlargement of the esophagus used to store food, it doesn't really digest anything). And it actually says that cause of death was liver and heart going on to elaborate all they found on these two organs (inflammation, fatty nodules, liquid in the lungs which comes from heart disease, etc). All consistent with liver failure...

:rainbow: Thank you for all your comments. There's not a day that had pass where i had to think and miss my little Dino.
I didn't understand the necropsy report and the doctors language as well.
I called the doctor to ask what did cause the liver failure that causes the heart attack. He told me that's he's not sure, but I should look at my garden and remove toxic plants.
Dino had free flight. He was such a happy bird. Never could i have imagine that the garden would have cause his death. Honestly, I'm still puzzled. :rainbow: :rainbow: :rainbow: :rainbow:

Also, The day Dino died, I didn't know what to do. My friend said i should put him in the freezer. I have never had this situation before. But it was the wrong thing to do.
It's always best to refrigerate the body and not freeze it. I don't know if the freezing of the body could give me 100% accurate results.

While the necropsy does say that the death was due to liver and heart failure. there is no way to actually determine exactly what the cause of the liver failure was. If the bird was free fed a diet of high fat foods such as pellets or seeds then that is the usual cause of liver failure. It is apparent that he thought that the tomato plant may have also contributed to the death.

It is possible that the requirement for the storage of the birds body has changed but my medical text says to freeze the body. it is best to take the body I right away but that is not always possible and yes freezing can interfere to varying degrees the results of a necropsy.

The best way to preserve a body for necropsy is to wrap it in a wet paper towel and put it in the fridge but the necropsy has to be done within a day or so of death.

Wolf is correct, when it comes to necropsies, the vet can tell you what he found to be the cause of death but, sometimes, not necessarily what caused the 'cause'. With parrots, when they find fatty nodules, inflammation, etc in the liver as well as the cardio vascular system, it's rule of thumb that it was the diet. Mind you, I am NOT blaming you! Species of birds that have extremely specialized diets always die young because it's simply impossible to feed them well!
