New birdie recipe

Postby Bird woman » Mon Jul 11, 2016 10:37 pm

Today I experimented with a new recipe and got 8 thumbs up , that means everyone gobbled it up. :) I took about a cup of Harrison's ground it into a powder , then took about 2 cups of assorted raw veggies and ground it to a thick pulp with a little hemp milk . Mixed it all together and rolled it into little 1/2 " balls . Then I took 5 almonds and 5 whole cashews and ground them into a powder and rolled the balls in it coating them completely. Then I put on a cookie sheet and in the oven on 150 degrees for about half an hour to dry them out a little , cool and refrigerate. I have very picky fids and everyone gobbled them up !!!! Another sneekey Pete way to get them to eat there veggies. B.W.

Good thinking, Birdwoman! Have you tried birdy bread? They all love it and it's a real good way to sneak in veggies and fruits into them :D

My birds ADORE birdy bread and they know the word I use for it: pan (bread in Spanish). All I have to say is: "Look what I have for youuuuuu: PAN!" and you should see the rush to get to a perch that is well situated so they can get a piece each before I put out the breakfast on the plates

I make it in a bred machine and it's the easiest thing because I throw everything in before I go upstairs to bed and, in the morning, birdy bread freshly baked and already cooled and ready to be served!

Hey pajarita can I have your birdie bread machine recipe, I haven't used one of those things in years always the old fashion way. But that sounds awfully appealing having it ready itself for morning  times getting thin these days.

I don't really have a recipe. I use a total of 4 cups of whole grain flours -for example, 2 of cracked whole wheat or kamut flour , 1 cup of coarse corn meal, 1/2 rolled oats and 1/2 of something else that could be potato, rice or something really healthy like sprouted teff flour; a tablespoon of honey, an envelope of dry yeast and a bit of warm water or juice. The other stuff varies and it's mostly what catches my fancy at the time but I always use pumpkin puree because it easy, nutritious and it adds to the density and moisture. Other stuff could be mashed sweet potatoes, grated carrots, grated zucchini, fresh corn, peas, chopped broccoli, etc with spicy peppers if I want to make it spicy OR naturally dried fruits like raisins, currants, dates, figs, organic and naturally dried apple chips or low sugar pineapple bits... that kind of stuff. I also use orange juice to make the right 'wetness' for kneading. And, you can also add some oat groats and nuts to it (but it has to be done after it 'kneads').

The great thing about birdy bread is that the birds like it no matter how it comes out. Too dry? That's fine! Too spicy? Ok! Too dense and moist? Better still! Mine is usually quite dense, dark and moist and my birds love it that way (I eat the fruity one with nuts, myself!)
