Parrot health insurance

Postby Bird woman » Thu Jul 14, 2016 3:00 pm

Here it is guys , nationwide insurance ) accidental or sickness health ins. At an avain specialist only and I think that's the catch .) 15.00 per month per bird will pay up to 2000 per accident or sickness per year with a 7000 dollar cap. There's a 50.00 deductible per lncedent then they pay 90 percent. They also with an added 8.00 per month will cover 185.00 of vets visits , labs or trims. That part sounds like a rip to me because that's 96.00 more per year for only 185.00 and I do my own trims and get blood panels as needed . This is nationwide pet ins.1-800-872-7387 ext.6259. I asked about group rates and he chuckled at me , so I guess not. :geek: please do your own due dillagence with ratings on this company and check with vet to see if they take this ins. Also remember they clearly stated AVIAN SPECIALIST !!!! And I know some of you that leaves out because none in your area. I only have one in mine. :danicing: Bird Woman

I will call and find out but it seems to me that 'avian specialist' is not 'certified avian vet' but any vet that treats birds, don't you think?

No Pajarita, he made it very clear to me the vet had to be board certified avian . Which I think is garbage , I do know vets in my area that are qualified and experienced to be able to provide most of the same services just not the complicated stuff. I'm going to be in contact with my vet today concerning the new macaws health records and I'll ask him about this pet insurance from a vets point of view. I'll gladly pay 15.00 a month per bird for accidental or sickness on my birds . When my Rosie was sick it was well over 12k ! BW.

I am with you on the board certified versus exotic vets! The best avian vet I've ever had (and most likely, I ever will) was not board certified - this woman gave birth on a Thursday and came to the clinic that Sunday to take the weekly XRay of my PrettyBird's leg (she had been treating her and had assisted the orthopedic vet surgeon on her surgery). And, the best board certified avian vet of Pennsylvania (also the one with the oldest and biggest practice in the Poconos and a professor in PennU) misdiagnosed a rescue (over and over because I took him back THREE times as the bird was obviously sick) and the bird ended up dead! Now, I don't know if anybody would have been able to save him (he had aflatoxicosis - he was an OWA ex-breeder that had been fed bad food) but I am sure that if he had been diagnosed early enough, I would have been able to extend his life and make his last months much more comfortable.

This new bird just came in today , I was expecting it , but wasn't expecting the cond. it came in especially when I was told that he was under MY vets care for the last 15 years. I think I'm defiantly going to give that insurance a try with this one. They couldn't release any info before owner signed a release form at her appointment Friday for beak nails and wing trim. I told her to leave his beak and wings alone. Apparently the bird had a seizure while doing nails and she acted like no big deal when she dropped the bird off. I hope I haven't bit off more than I can chew. That insurance will probably come in handy.. Wonder if they exclude pre existing conditions :? Well I hope not. BW

I believe we are over insured. Insurance takes money every month and adds up. A healthy bird will only cost a couple hundred once a year for the vet and may never have an emergency to run up the cost. The insurance can cost much more per year than is needed for they little one.

I keep a credit card just for my critters. It turns out cheaper than insurance and is more economical that they insurance.
