Thinking Plucking

Postby ParrotsForLife » Thu Jul 14, 2016 7:00 pm

I think Mango is plucking :( he doesn't do much and never plays with Rocko and Loki and when I first got him he would always play with his toys but he doesn't anymore. When we came back from that protest I noticed a few feathers missing on his legs and I didn't think anything of it but now it looks like he's tearing from the end of his tail and under his wings and maybe on his stomach too.I can't really entertain him and the only bonding we can really do is target training and showers.Ive never seen him picking at his feathers and I'm with him almost all the time and most of the feathers around are his.If it was mites the other birds would have it too wouldn't they? And they haven't lost any feathers.I wouldn't say he lost a whole lot of feathers but enough to notice that they are missing.

First make sure nutritional needs are met and there's no underlying health issues (vet check) swap toys out they get bored with the same ol stuff. Extra attention is nice , if you are not home TV , radio something to intertain , (a bird beside the cage for company )? After all that I get a all natural feather duster to hang in cage and they busy themselves preening that. Is there anything you've changed or done different lately? That's where I'd start . I've had 2 rescues in my time that were terrible pluckers almost bald except head and tips of wings and now there both almost fully feathered. I'm sure wolf or pajarita can add to this and offer great advice . Bird woman

Nothing has been changed and if I am out of the house he is with me.He lives with two Cockatiels and a African grey but he doesn't interact with the others.I don't know exactly if he is plucking or he just somehow lost a few feathers. He literally sits in the same spot all the time and if on me I'm sure he would stay there all day.He has learned a few mimics from my Aunts conures and he only sees them on Fridays and he interacts with them in a way and with my African grey through vocalisation.
