Postby FM6 » Sun Jul 17, 2016 3:42 pm

Hi. Im hand-rearing my three week old chick not the first bird I've hand-reared. I removed her from the box as her mother was biting off her toes. She eats pefectly well is very receptive to me and loves to play and cuddle however i noticed where the two toes are out the skin was dry and looked normal but now her foot is turning purplish greyish i dont think this is normal? Does she need a vet? What can i do to help her ? Please advise. Thanks.

I don't know what kind of bird this is, but if the feet look out if the ordinary to you, you should have a vet check her out. The mom could have broken the toes.

Indeed the toes could be broken or dislocated, but it is for certain that there is very little if any blood reaching the toes. The sooner you get this bird to the vet the better chance you have of saving the toes or even the foot.

They hide their problems from us until they are way to sick to hide it. Any time your bird acts different in any way take note of it and watch close. If it is something scary like you have found you need to get it to a vet.

These little beings are precious and totally dependent. Good human parronts will learn the personality of these little beings and be able to catch problems before they go too far.

Kudos to you for seeing the problem. His foot must hurt.

My Love Bird Tweetle Dee and Tweetle Dumb seemed okay until I noticed the Tweetle Dee was feeding his friend a lot more than usual. The vet could not figure out what was wrong with him but trimmed his beak because it over grew from not feeding himself. Tweetle Dee fed him, cared for him and protected him by always getting between me and Dumb until he passed.

Yes, please take the baby to an avian vet ASAP. It does sound as if the foot is not receiving adequate blood supply and, if it's not treated promptly, the foot will gangrene.
