Hello!
I'm currently maintaining someone else's aviary every other day (cockatiels and Bourke's parakeets) - Full story here: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=15456
I've been given permission to use the dirt areas of the aviary to plant a garden, and I was wondering if anyone has experience with planting stuff that the birds can eat? I've looked at several lists of toxic plants, and those are obviously out, but ideally, I'd like to plant something that the birds can actively munch on, since I'm unable to get to them to give them fresh food every day. Most of the space is partial sun but there is also some full shade, and we're in Southern California, so it's warm weather most of the time. There is a decent amount of planting space - maybe not for a larger tree but enough for some tall plants.
Does anyone have experience with this type of thing - growing edible things in an aviary? What's a healthy snack for these guys that I can maintain? They'll obviously still be getting their fresh mix from me every other day.
