Do I have to quarantine new bird from the same source?

Postby joephone » Thu Jul 21, 2016 12:50 am

Hi all,

I have a 5 month old male sun conure. I got him 3 months ago. Today I got another 3 month old female sun conure from the same seller.

I searched online. Everybody said I need to quarantine the new bird for 2 months. Then I called and asked the seller whether I really need to quarantine. He said NO because the bird had no problem. I asked him whether he put all birds in the same room he said yes.

So since they are from the same seller, and the new one arrives just 3 months later, do you think I need the quarantine process?

ps. the seller is the breeder. He only sells what he breeds.

Thanks

Yes. At least one month.

Even if you got them from the same place they had been separated and the second one could have contracted an illness that does not show yet. Please don't take a chance.

This is also a time when you can bond with him while he has a secondary bond to the other bird he can hear. It will also prepare your first bird that he is not the only. Sometimes they don't want to share their human. You can reassure him by giving him the same attention or more than before.

Put them in different rooms and wash your hands between them. Don't share food and water bowls. These are little beings that are now your babies. Put them in separate rooms but close enough so they can communicate. It is like two kids becoming friends by phone calls.

Well, for one thing I don't trust breeders. They all say they do everything right, that their birds are healthy, that they love their birds, etc etc but, let's face, they are merchants selling a product which is completely unregulated and, in all honesty, I don't have that much trust in any salesperson when it comes to the quality of the product they are selling - and most especially people who exploit animals. I would quarantine for a month.

Always quarantine you never know when they have added a new bird or one of there's has become stressed and possibly shedding something it may be a carrier of. I never take chances :( BW
