Experienced bird vet in West Midlands UK?

Postby Giddy » Mon Aug 29, 2016 9:24 am

Hi all, we have two parrotlets and one of them is ill, we've been seeing a vet that has dealt with birds but we want to find an experienced vet that knows more. We know there's one in Solihull, but neither of us can drive. So does anyone know of any close to the Dudley area?

So sorry to hear about your bird's troubles! Unfortunately, I am in the US so I cannot help you. But, if you want to tell us what the problem is, we might be able to give you a few good pointers...

Hi, thank you.
Well the vet tested her for bird Chlamydia and that was negative.(the only test he performed)
She was on Baytril and metacam for three weeks. Now for the past three weeks she's on terbinafine antifungal medicine aswell as f10 saline solution in a nebuliser.

We've only had her for almost a couple months, we realised she was ill when we got her home. She was weak, fluffed up, clicking when breathing and almost looked drunk as she was unsteady.

She's still fluffed up, the clicking seems to ease on and off, her nose was sore from rubbing it (we mentioned this to the vet who said not to worry about it) and she is bald in spots on her head from her partner over preening. We've split them up at night times as we suspect it's when it's happening. They get to spend time together in the day supervised. There seems to be no more improvement, she has perked up a lot from the heat lamp and fresh food and mixed foods we provide.

Thank you we are looking at amicus vets now, and I may be able to get a lift off of my mum and step dad.

Yes, heat (90 degrees) and fresh food daily are essential when they are sick. Chlamydia was the only test? No fecal, no choanal, no blood work? Have you given her some good probiotics on her soft food? ACV in her water? Have you supplemented her with vitamins/minerals or is she on pellets?

Also, I would not put her with her mate at this point in time. Sick parrots do better when put in a cage by themselves (cover the cage on all sides except the front so she can get light) and kept in a quiet spot. They like to hide from the rest of the flock (and mate) and having her in the usual spot with another bird in her cage will cause her stress -which she doesn't need right now.
