Time line for feeding green cheek conure?

Postby connmccollou » Wed Sep 21, 2016 6:06 am

I just got a new green cheek conure - the paperwork states she hatched on May 1, 2016. My concern is that she will not eat anything but sunflower seeds and millet. I have been researching day and night and have tried several different approaches and nothing has worked. All kinds of fruits and veggies raw, left whole, cubed, diced, sliced and puréed. She won't even touch it. Then I took the same foods and tried cooking . Broiling, boiling, steamed...again... nothing.
She constantly tried to get into my diet soda, attacking the straw when I used the clear version. If I was using one she couldn't see the soda through, she ignored it.
I started to think that she wanted to be fed thru it, as if it were a syringe. Could she be too young to eat food? I blended together some of the puréed foods with some water and tried using a small syringe, but it wasn't what she wanted, either.
Any suggestions or ideas would be so very much appreciated. Please.
Thanks so very much.

Eat in front of her and share what you can from your dish. In the wild she would be learning from the flock what to eat. You are her flock.

Rambo and Myrtle beg when they see something I have. Even though they may have what I have they want to see it come from my plate.

Most all of my birds came with an all seed diet. Myrtle was easier than the others. She watched Rambo to see what was good to eat. She learned quickly. The first thing I tried was a French fry (not good for them but I had to start somewhere) She rejected it until she saw Rambo take his and enjoy it. I could hear Rambo yelling and found Myrtle on the other end of his French fry. Now she begs for anything that any of us has. I have had to teach her the word "mine" to keep her from stealing.
My Cockatiel Sweetie was the adventurous one who would try anything. She taught the others what to eat besides seed. It was a real loss when she died. Not only do I miss her but I don't have a bird who will teach the other birds.

Keep on trying using the methods we outlined on your other posting and don't give up or despair if he/she doesn't touch any of the good food - parrots take a loooooong time to get familiar enough with a new food so as to dare to try it. Just to give you an idea, it took five years for an African Gray to try blueberries even though she got them once a week and everybody else was eating them - granted that African grays are real picky eaters while GCCs are not and that poor Nina had severe emotional problems but FIVE YEARS?!

Mine get one nut with their supper each day. Rambo loves cashews but will not touch a Brazil nut.
Myrtle loves Brazil nuts but will not touch a cashew.
