Just a tip you shouldn't believe in every single thing a vet tells you especially when theres facts out there, You just have to do your own research.Doctors are the same, What has the freshness of the salmon got to do with anything? The fact is they don't need meat whether you think its good or bad.

I researched it. I have a different perspective than you. And you won't change my mind. Of course salmon isn't the only source of such nutrients I give my parrot.

Bird Woman, thank you for the response. Glad that there's others from the Pac NW here who understands our fresh fish. I have never tried Alaskan salmon, though. And yes, Chance only gets a little bit, and it is only sometimes when I eat it. :)

I didn't say it was the only nutrients you give but why would you feed it knowing it could possibly do harm and you could just choose the healthy safe option, For example if you were feeding meat for the protein knowing your bird cant really digest it good like they could in the wild and it could possibly harm them then why would someone feed it if they can get protein from plant sources, If you think about it then it doesn't really make sense now does it

Would you be kind enough to share your sources for your research on feeding salmon to parrots? Because I've never found anything on it except anecdotal - meaning people who says they feed it which I don't consider at all.

I don't believe A LITTLE BIT once in a great while is harmful to my parrot.

As for research, Google salmon and African Grey. I found supportive websites. Obviously you don't want to give a lot.

Why would I want to research about salmon when I've done plenty of research and have gotten scientific information, Even if it is just a little bit and maybe that little bit doesn't cause harm but its still not really digestible but if were being real a little bit every once in a while can cause damage unless whatever does happen on the inside heals over that period of time but in that case why would you wanna harm them anyway even if you don't believe it why take a risk when it does not need to be fed? Tell me why your Parrots need to have Salmon or any other meat.

I don't need to explain my opinion further. You cannot accept a dissenting opinion on this, no matter how slight (a bit of salmon once in a blue moon), so I won't engage further with you. I don't know you, and have been on this forum for a long time. Not to mention you come off as radical. I suggest you provide more than just your "word" if you want to convince others that never, ever, EVER any salmon, EVER. Unless you can do that you are wasting your time.

Im not trying to change your mind and I can show you my research if you want but I wasn't trying to change your opinion just wondering why you would feed it even if you don't believe it.Plus I never mentioned salmon specifically I'm talking about ALL animal protein and like I said if you want me to show you I have no problem with that.

I did google African Greys and salmon, as well as lots of different combinations of herbivore, birds, parrots, fish, omega 3, etc (I've been doing research on parrots dietary ecology for over 20 years and still do a bit every day just to keep up to date with new knowledge) and I haven't been able to find a single thing that is even remotely based on anything scientific. As a matter of fact, the 'good' sites always admit that they don't really know what greys nutritional needs are (which nobody does so I appreciate their honesty). Any particular reason why you chose salmon over flax seeds?

I don't think greenwing feeds his bird very much salmon , mine have never tasted it as it's not my favorite fish but as I said a taste now and again surely wouldn't do any harm. Several of my birds dine on there stools with us and get tastes of things we eat that I'm sure isn't good for them but a tid bit now and again doesn't hurt. There are several sites some old some new that differ substantially on giving parrots , fish ,chicken or eggs and some from specialist and big breeders. I know I am always trying to come up with different recipes and ways to get all my birds to eat healthy and sometimes it's a challenge . We all do the best we can do as we learn and to tell you the truth all my birds are individuals with there own special way of eating and taste buds. BW

I'll have to find the information that explains what it does to certain parts of their body

Thanks, Bird Woman. I appreciate that you're getting what I'm saying. I hope others do, too.

Pajarita, I do not prefer giving salmon over flaxseed. I never said that at all.

In any case, I spent a few minutes in Google and pulled up some articles, some scholarly. I think they have a lot of good information.

Nutritional requirements of Parrots from Beauty of Birds article

Effect of dietary omega-3 fatty acids on red blood cell lipid composition and plasma metabolites in the cockatiel, Nymphicus hollandicus abstract, but full article available, requires a little searching around.

Merck Veterinary Manual for psittacines and nutrition

Current Therapy in Avian Medicine and Surgery REALLY interesting info on page 146, but overall some good information.

Nutritional Considerations See page 21 of 23.
