Leave the food inside and go away.

What did the breeder do? Is he fully weaned, or does he sort of expect human presence when he eats?

its just that he took all the babies out and fed them while he was right next to him and i think that tuppi got used to eating while someone is watching.

when i take the food out and sit next to him he will eat absolutely LOADS.

As much as this is a pain for now, you must admit, it's pretty cute :) I can just imagine you sitting next to your baby while he eats.

Hmm, I wonder how most birds get past that stage? The only thought I have is to set up a tray table or something right outside the cage and feed him there, gradually moving yourself further away, then transfer to inside the cage while you are still in the room, then start leaving for longer and longer periods... Dunno. An expert, I am not!

Honestly, if the bird knows how to eat and has been observed eating before, it's not going to starve itself because a human isn't there to feed it. Measure out how much food is in the bowl and take a mental note of it and leave it like that all day and see how much is eaten later. The best way to observe this is by not putting too much in the bowl, that way it's easier to see how much is gone. If you can, weigh the parrot as well to make sure it's maintaining its weight.

The only time I've ever had this problem is when we got our first budgie. He would only ever eat when we feed him outside his cage. We were told to stop feeding him outside and I'm 100% sure he never touch his food for almost 48hours! Then finally he went down and just started eating. It was a real concern for obvious reasons but he did get over it.

We've had 4 other birds since and never experienced that again.

Well that's my limited experience and not sure if that's of any help.
