Repetitive Behaviour

Postby ParrotsForLife » Mon Feb 06, 2017 1:21 pm

I wanted to talk about Mango and his behaviour because its nothing I've ever seen before and has been going on for a few months now, Well anyway Mango will sometimes bring his head back and forth or around in circles making small noises like a dogs squeaky toy on low volume lol I was just wondering if this is normal and why he only started doing this.

I do not think that this is any normal type of behavior. I wonder if the cause might be that it is a nervous disorder or a nutritional problem. I think that in either case that I would recommend a visit to the vet for blood work emphasizing that you are concerned due to this strange behavior.

Look up star gazing on the internet , I think that's what it's called and see if that's what mango is doing. BW

No, no, that's not star gazing. Star gazing is the neck fixed in an abnormal position which makes the head to be thrown back (as if the bird was looking up to the stars all the time - I had two birds that had this in the rescue). But, even though Mango does not have star gazing, it does sound as if he has what it's called a stereotypy - this is a repetitive behavior that has no actual purpose and which indicates chronic anxiety.

It's anxiety that happens all the time and not comes and goes like it would under normal conditions. When you are OK and something stressful happens, you can get anxious but this anxiety will disappear once the cause of it ends (as in when you have to take an exam, for example - you are all anxious and nervous before and even while you are taking it but, once it's over, you are fine). When animals live under conditions that are inadequate and the conditions never get better, they end up with chronic anxiety. Animals in zoos (even good ones!) have it and develop the stereotypies (like tigers that pace their cage all day long, day after day after day; or elephants that swing their body going from one foot to another all the time; or dolphins that swim in a circle; parrots that pluck and self mutilate, etc). Basically, when an animal is forced to live a life completely different than what nature evolved them for and this life brings on causes for anxiety all the time, the consequence is chronic anxiety.

Is there any way to help him? Is there any reason why he is the only one that does this

Sometimes the best way to describe a behavior is to post a video showing it. Perhaps letting us see what the bird is doing, will allow us to give better replies.
