Red dots on macaw face

Postby Steaphan » Sun Mar 05, 2017 12:03 am

My blue and gold has been getting these red dots on her face, some look like their injuries, red dots with raw tops, I guess u can say. They are mostly along the area where the yellow feathers end. Sorry the picture is not very good.

Your bird needs to see an a avian doctor ASAP , this could be a bacterial or fungal infection , nothing to drag your feet on ! There also could be a reaction of something your bird got into or a allergy from food or something in household new toy, etc. either way you should get to the bottom of it . Think back to days before the breakout started and retrace everything right down to any new foods or places your birds been or things coming in or around your bird that's different. This will be helpful for the vet visit. Keep us posted . BW

I just got home from work, and they are super faint, still there but hard to see now. I made an appointment with avian vet for Wednesday. Maybe it will be cleared up by then.... In all your experiences, is there anything you think I can do in mean time, I tried cutting out one of the foods I give her to see if it changes, like aN allergy. Unlike a dog I cannot give her Benadryl correct lol..... I have take away all but one wooden perch, and put two of the rainbow colours rope ones. To me the dots looked like injuries from maybe the wood.

Thx again for all your prompt replies

Don't give medication. Do you give your bird regular baths? Make sure cage is clean and make that vet appointment . I don't ever take chances with the birds and it's not common for a bird to injure themselves several places at once. I've never seen spots like that on any of my macaws so see what the vet says and make sure it's a bird vet. Good luck BW

No, that's not a blush and I don't think it's an allergy, either. Have you tried gently washing the redness to see if it comes out? Because, sometimes, the toys colors bleed a bit. Is the red spot raised in any way? As in an abrasion..
