my baby is sick and there are NO vets ...

Postby Anita911 » Tue Apr 25, 2017 10:05 pm

Dear forum people!
Thank you for reading my post, it will be quiet long because I need to tell the story of my parrot....

I have a baby African grey. She is 1.4 years old. Her name is Cookie. We live in Vietnam and there are NO vets around. They only do cats and dogs. So we have no chance of taking her to a specialist to other country because of stupid law that we cant export birds...:(

Cookie was a healthy bird. She used to play and scream and buzz around the house. She was eating everything with joy and was never a problem to feed until....

We started to give her egg and not warm food. (We never though its bad for her and she is so sensitive). She developed Candida (we did poop test) and we treated her with baby amoxicillin. It seemed we treated her...and she went back to buzzing and playing and be a happy bird.

Few month later we noticed she became quieter...no buzzing around, sleeping more than usual. Then later she started to vomit in her water only . ( Sleezy white liquid) . she never vomited outside the water bowl. It seemd to be reaction on Zupreem pellets. We stopped giving them to her and changed that with fresh fruits and vegetables, but she still kept vomiting untill 1 day. She was sitting on her perch and not moving...didn't step on my hand or anything and when I put her on my hand she was so weak so she fell off my hand....no grip at all....I panicked!!!! ( she refused to eat veggies). So we gave her pellets again...and she was able to fly again and returned her grip....but then we noticed that her crop always empty....and she drinks a lot of water and kept throwing up white liquid...in water and food, but no outside the bowls. And then we wighed her and she was 325 gramm!!! Whereas she was 480-500 gramms before….WE PANIKED
We took her to the only person who can know about parrots: the breeder. He gave her magical injection. ( He didn’t tell the name but said its very powerful drug to reverse liver damage and also multivitamin.) He said fed her with beans, plant protein and fresh vegetables.
We came home and she ate….ate well and started gaining weight back….5-8 gramms a day. When she got to 380 she decided not to eat buckwheat and beens with vegetables anymore, we couldn’t put anything in her for almost 2 days….she dropped back to 340 gramms….We added brown rice and other veggies in the diet, also milk thistle, bird probiotic and Guardian angel vitamins. She stated gain weight again. She was 380 yesterday. She was a bit singing yesterday on the balcony and chewing her wooden perch. BUT She is VERY SLEEPY,,,ALL THE TIME HEAD TUCKED IN AND FEATHERS FLUFFED UP. SHE JUST WANT TO SNUGGLE CLOSER TO ME OR HUSBAND AND SLEEPS LIKE THAT. TODAY she didn’t want to eat her pumpkin with rice and veggies…..and sleeping on her perch.
Ouh, she doesn’t accept pellets….she vomits them all and feel very sick after them. So Harrison pellets wont be a solution. What food can we give her?
WE DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO….please help….does anyone has similar situation?
We love Cookie to bits and we cant loose her….please help…if there is any vet online….
Thank you for your time….
Cookie

Keep her even with not eating, as long a she is drinking it is a hopeful sign.

One of our favorite parrot people, Wolf, is gone but I think he said he had to drive for two hours to get to his avian veterinarian.
That parrot is not just a bird. It is a being equivalent to a two year old child. She knows you are trying to take care of her and loves you for it but she needs an avian vet. Find one by word or mouth or even better check the internet. You may have to travel to get to one but your baby needs help and you are the only one she has.

OK, let's see. First of all, if she really did have candida, you did not cure it with amoxicillin because candida is a fungus and amoxicillin is an antibiotic so it works ONLY with bacteria and not fungus so she might still have that fungal infection (the vomiting would indicate that). Secondly, the breeder should not be injecting a bird and should not be treating a bird that has not been diagnosed. I am not blaming you for taking her there but you need to do research before you allow somebody who is not a professional treat a bird because parrots should never get injections (they damage their muscle tissue too deeply). Third, there is no such thing as an injection that reverses liver damage so you either misunderstood, the breeder does not know what he is talking about or he lied to you.

You need to get a diagnosis and even though there might not be avian vets in Vietnam, there has to be a regular vet that treats exotics (you have zoos so there has to be vets that treat the animals in the zoos). You could try to treat her on your own but not knowing what is wrong, you would have to treat for a number of possible causes and, if the bird is weak, she might not do well with a number of different medicines. If you went this route, you need to treat with an antifungal and a wide spectrum antibiotic (I would use fluconazole and liquid enrofloxacin). I would also give her liver cleansers and tonics (non-alcoholic liquid milk thistle and dandelion root extract plus methionine), immune system boosters (Echinacea and add a bit of garlic and oregano to her food), a special diet (you need to eliminate sugars as much as possible and give her food that is easy to digest) and, about two hours after the antibiotic, give her probiotics to help with her intestinal flora and digestion.

I don't feed pellets, I feed gloop (you can find recipes in the diet section) for breakfast and nuts for dinner (you need to make sure she is getting enough protein). You can make any combination of whole grains in the gloop but don't use anything that is not 'whole' so no white rice (it has no nutrition whatsoever).

Keep her VERY warm (85 to 95 degrees) and quiet (she needs her rest to get better) and do look for a vet that treats exotics because that is going to be the best thing for her.

Thank you ALL for your replies and advise.
I have taken her to the vet and tested for parasites and worms. It came out negative.

I found out what the guy injected: it was dexocillin injection with Vetafarm injectable vitamin boost. I researched its for bacterial infection and liver damage treatment.

After the injection she developed weird poop. There were huge amount of white small hard seed-looking things. That was before any food given...
Now we feeding her with good white rice porriage mixed with millet porriage with sprinkles of Vetafarm vitamins. She eats them very well. We were advised to give her 3 times a day 1 Tablespoon each time, but she cries out for food! seems like she is hungry all the time! Shall we give her food more often?
I will post all pictures of her poop and herself in the next post.

Also we will go to the Zoo hospital tomorrow...hopefully they speak any English ...

Thank you again for your time and valuable help :gray:

Testing for parasites is fine but she needs bloodwork done (you don't know if she has an infection and, if she does, what kind it is). I've never seen poop like that and it looks real bad - it looks more like vomit than poop... I don't know what those little things are but they look like undigested grains of something and that, I am afraid, it's a terrible sign! White rice has NO nutrition whatsoever and although millet is not bad per se, it has very little in terms of nutrition, also. Besides, one tablespoon is not anywhere near enough to fill her crop so she is crying for more because she is hungry (I would never measure food for a sick animal, especially a bird, I would give them as much a they want and even try very hard to get them to eat more after they are full). PLEASE take her to a good vet because if this is what the vet that saw her told you, he doesn't know what he is talking about. There is a supplement I use for very sick birds although it is meant more for rodents than birds: it's called 'Critical Care' for herbivores from Ox Bow Animal Health. It's like a formula you use during the recovery of very sick animals but it can be used while they are still sick. I don't like it because it has soy in it but it does the trick in a pinch and it doesn't have very high protein which is never good for birds (http://www.oxbowanimalhealth.com/vets/p ... tical_care)

Thank you, Pajarita!
We will make blood work on Wednesday, because its public holiday in Vietnam until then and there is nothing open. The problem is there are NO AVIAN VETS, apart from the one we have been to. There is more complicated situation with vets here than anyone can imagine. But we will do bloodwork and post results here, because not sure if they can read it properly according to birds...unfortunately ...

Since we were told that there is fat present in her poop, its very consistent with fatty liver, and according to the peer reviewed article: https://www.beautyofbirds.com/liverdisease.html
we gave her Aloe detox with Spring water.

And dinner was brown rice with buckwheat and brokoli with tiny of egg yolk and sprinkle of vetafarm vitamins. She ate all and didn't cry much.

The dose of 1 tablespoon per time seems working, because before she was too full, her crop was too hard and when she vomited there was food from few days ago. Now her crop is getting fool and not getting hard. We will do Everything to help her. But we will feed her more often as you saying because she cries out for more, but we very scared that because her liver doesn't work properly, she doesnt digest food as fast as she should. Now in the poop there are no white small things but there is water and urates...no feces...Maybe tomorrow morning it will be better. I will update.

I don't know who told you that those little things are fat but birds with fatty liver disease don't have poop like that (I have three birds that have it right now and have had more that are now dead). When the article says: "The bird may develop diarrhea, and the droppings may take on a more yellowish or greenish hue due to biliverdin being excreted." they are referring to the urates becoming yellow or greenish in color (they are supposed to be white or a very light cream color) and the picture you showed us is not of regular diarrhea (this is when the feces are so soft that they mix with the urates and the urine - it's usually refer to 'pea soup' because that's what looks like). Besides, a 1.5 year old gray would not develop hepatic lipidosis even if she had been eating the wrong food all along. It takes years of bad food for it to start and the bird would have shown other symptoms before this. This doesn't mean that she doesn't have liver malfunction, just that it's not likely for it to be hepatic lipidosis. It could be metal poisoning, it could be from chlamydiosis, it could be from hepatitis, cancer, and many other reasons. Still, it won't hurt her to get the liver tonics and yes, aloe vera is a good detoxifier (I use it for my birds regularly but it has to be the one from the inner filet and only the juice, not the gel) but aloe vera alone is not going to make her better (when the article mentions aloe vera, they are talking about a specific product called Aloe Vera Detox Formula and not just plain aloe vera juice (this is it: http://www.akins.com/shop/product_view. ... _product=0)
