2017 Solstice

Postby Pajarita » Sat Jul 01, 2017 9:47 am

I keep on forgetting to post about this

In June 21, we had the summer solstice, meaning it was the longest day and the shortest night of the year. What this means to us is that this is a turning point in our birds circannual cycle. Their bodies had already registered the fact that the days were getting to be too long and the long day breeders breeding season ended to allow molt to start. Some of the short day breeders, the ones that breed twice during the year (like cockatoos, for example), and the super opportunistic breeders (budgies, tiels, lovies, etc) will still produce sexual hormones until the days are real short so, unless you only have long day breeders (like amazons, for example), the breeding season is not yet over for the year. Diet should continue to be high protein with an emphasis on complete proteins (like hemp and quinoa) and extra methionine (like sesame seed) for feather production until molt is almost all done (no need to wait until it's completely done as the bird will have plenty protein 'leftover' even if you reduce it before it's finished).
