Leg cramp??

Postby LB10018 » Tue Feb 06, 2018 2:08 pm

We brought home my husband's family's bird this weekend to live with us permanently. He is an African Gray timneh and about 40 years old.
He's doing great, adjusting well and seems to be himself at our home. However, every night his left leg goes into a cramped state and stays that way for several minutes. The first time i saw it happen I massaged the leg until it got stronger and he was able to prop it back onto the perch. He was pretty much helpless until it passed.
I've made a doctor's appointment but he won't be seen until February 19th. I'm asking if anyone has had similar experience and if there's something we should be doing differently with him until he is seen. I'm wondering if it is a deficiency or an excess of something he's eating?
My husband asked his brother if it ever happened while he was at their home but he is traveling and hasn't responded.

I haven't seen this, but I'd be concerned about a stroke. It seems to happen a lot in older greys.

Or a mild seizure... Grays are known for their calcium imbalances - especially old ones that were not fed right for many years [this is not a criticism on your MIL's bird husbandry, nobody fed them right back then, we just did not know any better]. It could also be an enlarged liver and/or ascites pressing on the sciatic nerve. I strongly recommend you get a complete physical for him with CBC, avian chem, bile acids and a full body XRay asap because, at his age, he is sure to have issues. But, if he is found to have high uric acid or cholesterol, I suggest you don't use mammal medicines [avian vets are very keen on prescribing mammal medicines for them] but make him better the natural way, through diet and supplements. It takes longer but it's also 100 times safer.
