What do you use to mop the floor?

Postby Alexander » Fri May 14, 2010 3:53 am

Now that I am going to have a parrot at home I was wondering what medium I will have to use to mop the floor. Plain water might be 100% safe for the bird, but I don't think it is very effective. I have heard of apple cider vinegar, but its smell is not very pleasant. So, what do you use to mop the floor?

We just use normal floor cleaner with a mop, however the birds are out of the area when we mop and don't go back until its dry and smells are gone. I too would be interested if people have any ideas on this.

er..My floors get the swiffer wet mop, with chemicals on some, sometimes when you use the swiffer mop you find you can use 2 clorox chemical wipes on the pad and mop with them, but if the windows and doors are open this can get out quickly..
People in my house do mopping in sections,so hallway+ kitchen, bedrooms+ bedrooms,kitchen/dining room+ living room,so the smell doesnt overpower anyone. But the chemicals in the wipes are transfered on to the floor and the smell isnt strong unless you put it within 2 feet of yourself. These have been used usually even near my bird cages but because these are high up around 3\4 feet off the floor on tables,or at times moved to another section for say cleaing the table too.Just be careful how you do it near the birdcages, and dont let any pets on those areas till long after they've dried

now for the slightly more bird friendly way, (check it out)recently I've been using this steam mop, just add water plug in and hand pump, and it'll make floors shine, and has like 5 different mop heads even a steam duster attachment.

You just sweep/vacuum then go over it with the steam mop, it's about the size of a hand vacuum+ the 4 foot pole/handle(no i'm not trying to sell you one  ),the noise of steam comming out is identical to Darth Vader....and on an average it takes like 10min to mop a large section of an house and sounds like Darth Vader running a marathon/asthma attack.
This can cause some stress at first to birdies but it's amazing and makes you want to roll on the floor, and immediately after the wetness has turned to vapor i've been having a hard time resisting the urge of letting my budgie play on the floors with me.

Interesting, alight15. I think I'll invest on one of these. I really want to do without the chemicals and the benefits are numerous for the bird, myself as well as the environment. So far I was using chemicals for the mopping and for cleaning the bathroom (sometimes for the kitchen too), but now that I am going to have a parrot I believe I ought to be able to do without them.

Thank you both for your advice! I would be interested in hearing the cleaning methods other people use, too.

Alight15- Don't you just love the steam mop? I just bought one and I do! It has no chemicals, only steam and it cleans the floor really well. It was a little expensive but well worth it. It also just makes mopping easier since you just put water in it, plug it in and mop. I also think the steam smells clean and gets rid of odors.

The room where scooter lives has wood flooring, it either gets Swiffer wet-jetted or gets damp mopped with Murphy's oil soap.

yup ^^..although I do plan on using the chemical one once in a while...I mean
when i first got the steam mop I thought i'd alternate but since steaming is easier I havent done chemical since..still I guess I might ...i still have a lot of swiffer wet wipes..those''ll probably be limited to the bathroom though..

oh yea and I forgot it does eliminate odors ;)

I bought a steam mop from amazon and I can't wait to test it and see the results. I am thinking of using it for the wall tiles in the bathroom, too...

My bird is rarely on the floor. We switched to a steam mop because of the dogs. I absolutely love it! It's a Lysol brand one so you can put lysol in it and use the chemical wherever you'd like to. I only use the lysol in the bathroom though where I prefer a little extra cleaning and the animals aren't in there very often.

Ohhh... that's a great idea Alexander! I'm going to have to try mine on the shower walls as well! Thanks for the idea!
