I'm scared my Bird is sick

Postby budgieowner:) » Tue Jun 08, 2010 3:46 pm

I recently gotten a budgie, two days ago to be exact, and I think it's a baby according to Petco. I noticed it closes it's eyes a lot and sleeps in the cage and when I take it out of the cage. My bird's tail also shakes as well as it's body, looking like it's shivering. My house has a pretty decent temperature now. Is this normal? I'm scared it's sick, and I can't really tell. This is my first time owning a bird. Once, I caught it sitting on the floor of the cage. It isn't really energetic compared another bird my friend has. Other times, it frantically walks on the bottom of the cage looking like it wants to get out. Is this normal??? Should I take it back to petco and look for a healthier one?? I only have 2 weeks to return the bird. Should I wait another day? I want to start out with a good bird
Additionally, I tried finger training the bird, and it's still pretty scared of my finger. When I was at petco, the bird was perfectly fine and happy, and would go on my finger while a bird expert trained him. Do you know how long it will be until my bird becomes well tamed??

It sounds like the budgie is just stressed from the transition but if the stress is extreme, it could be ill. Keep the temperature up and don't run the air conditioner or make any drafts where it is located.

However, only a vet could tell you if the bird is actually sick or not. Don't push the bird too much until it is eating well and healthy.

I understand, I will give it a couple of days to rest and adapt to his surroundings.
But the thing I do not understand is that chester, my bird, is in a position like his stomach hurts.
He is breathing heavily. What should I do?

I think if you really think he is sick, you have three choices -- take him back to the store, take him to an avian vet or wait and see with the risk that he might get sicker and even die. I'm sorry your new bird isn't doing so well... I think I would probably opt for the vet, but that can get expensive.

I'm pretty sure it's sick, due to its behavior. Thank you for helping me. I really appreciate it. I really like this bird and it's so cute! If someone tells me how to put a picture up, I'll post a picture of my bird. I'll most likely going to return it and get another one. :(

The color of the poop depends on the diet. Green is pretty normal. Is there a white/cream part and a clear part as well?

By black do you mean totally black or just dark colored?

Maybe we should have a poop identification contest like the parrot identification contest. What would we call the winner -- Poopologist Extrodinaire? Noteworthy Investigator kNowldegeable on Cage Oriented Messes Parrot Owners Often Ponder (NINCOMPOOP)?

Not to be too heartless, though -- how is the birdie doing?
