Now, I agree with the article in that apple cider vinegar is not really a detoxifying agent BUT it's different when you talk about a detox regime with a rehomed parrot. Let me explain why I think this. When I talk about the detox regime I follow with a new bird (I don't do it with young birds, only with birds that are old or that I know have been eating a bad diet for a long time), I am not only focusing on cleaning the liver and kidneys, I am trying to bring everything back to a good place. And this also means cleaning up any type of infection that might be present - even subclinical ones. I use supplements that specifically target the liver and kidneys but I use the ACV to help clean any fungal (yeast) overgrowth that might be lurking in their digestive tract (I also use a wide spectrum antibiotic that I add to their water to help with bacterial infections). The way I look at it is: if I can clean out the bigger part of 'excess' (too much bad bacteria, too much yeast, etc), the bird's immune system (helped with the organic fresh food diet, the strict solar schedule and the good lights) will take over and finish the job. So, regardless of the fact that ACV does not really detoxify, I will continue to use it.
