Sad story, need help

Postby ijtorresg » Fri Jun 11, 2010 10:17 pm

Hello there, im a owner of an Fisheri Lovebird and i know a whole lot about those birds. the thing is i ran today with a vendor who had two little parrots (really dont know which kind) so i stopped and asked how much for the birds (just for the sake of it, i hadnt the intention to buy them..as he was showing them to me i notice how badly they were treated by this guy, he just grabbed them like they were a toy, he grabbed them from their wings, heads, etc in a way that was just totally wrong so, i ended up buying the birds, cuz they deserved to be treated with respect and love. theyre still babies, give or take i think theyre about 2-4 months old i really dont know, but they cant even stand up right and firm...so my question is, i dont know anything about these birds, what they eat ( when young) i gave them a little water and some smashed rabbit food (kinda like a pellet) cuz all i had was alpist but they didnt seem to pay attetion to that...i was thinking giving them soaked bread, with either water or milk, but i really dont know. Im hoping to get help from you guys, here are some pics of them, i bealive they smaller ones is a male (as the vendor told me) and i named him Dio (as in the Legend Ronnie James Dio RIP), the girl the chubbier one still doesnt have a name...welll thanks in advance!!!

Dios wife was named Wendy. That might be a cute name.

They look like some sort of conure, maybe a Dusky Head or something? I can't really tell.

Try to give them oatmeal, whatever food your lovebird eats, fruits and veggies, whole grain cheerios, pellets... basically anything healthy (no avocado, chocolate or alcohol) They might still need formula. If you put your finger in their mouths do they start bobbing their heads quickly like they are trying to eat?

If your lovebird eats pellets you can soak those in fruit juice for them.

actually they did, though they were scared, a lot!....but somehow i tried to lure them and they became rapidly comfortable with me, after that i tried to soften the rabbit food with some water, Wendy (Thanks  ) was the first that started eating or thats what i think they were doing cuz they were like chewing the food, anyhow, after that, Dio started to eat from Wendys beak...but they didnt eat a whole lot, after that i gave them some water in a syringe they DRANK, i mean like it was the last Coke on earth...My lovebird just eats alpist, and i find this funny cuz its the only thing he would eat, just alpist, no pellets, no fruits, no cron, nothing, just alpist, i had a hard time training him

Make sure you weigh them every day. They should either be gaining weight or stay constant. If they drop in bodyweight its a sign that something is wrong.
If they are not eating properly there's a chance they arent weaned yet, or not properly weaned. I suggest you look for a breeder in your area with experience with handfeeding small parrots.
