Can parrots get TB from their owners?


Just wondering, because doctors think my mom has it.

It's not on the list of the few things I know are transmissible between birds and humans, but you might give your vet a call just to make sure.

eep. I don't have a vet, and I really can't afford it at the moment! If my mom does come back positive, I'll probably have my aunt foster the bird.

people with human tb should not own birds for risk of infecting their birds. (and its apparently harder to treat a bird than a human. much harder. )

Notscared, actually that article implies the strains that affect birds aren't the same that typically affect humans... but it also makes that statement.... so I think an avian vet would have to make a definitive statement. I was incorrect, however, in that avian tuberculosis is a zoonosis, although typically only immunocompromised individuals get it.

Better safe than sorry though!

oh goodness....what a mess! I just got her...don't want to give her away!

Well, we haven't gotten any definitive results yet, so maybe it's not TB after all!

Of course, I am more concerned about *our* health, but I definitely don't want Penelope to get sick.

I did read an article about human to bird transmission of human TB, but the guy was actually chewing his parrot's food before feeding it to him.

Well, if symptoms persist after your mom back, consult your vet. You don't need to pay for it, just visit animals health care being run by the Government in your locality, I'm sure there is.

But if you ask my opinion, yet it can be. Normally, parrots are quite healthy animals. But they share same health condition as with human ( as far as my readings is concerned).
