Puffed up personality budgie

Postby Budgie81 » Thu Aug 15, 2019 5:25 pm

My new budgie acts normal in all the healthy budgie thing's, but loves to puff up even when walking around. He has been this way for the whole time about a week now. He is now very curious and has my other guy doing things he's never done lol they fly a lot. He loses his fluff from time to time from certain activities, but then right back to it. Also his tail is pointed differently than my other budgie, it seems to point straight back instead of down. Do budgies have different body types like people? Should I be concerned about the puffy attitude?

Thanks!

Well, it depends. Young birds have baby contour plumage (these are the small, kind of round feathers that cover their body) which is finer than the adult one they get when they go through their juvenile molt so, if the new bird is very young, his 'puffed up' appearance could just be due to the baby plumage. But, if the bird is not active enough or has any other symptom like diarrhea, lack of appetite, weakness during flight, sleeping right after breakfast or many times during the day (budgies are very flighty and usually just rest a bit at noon, the rest of the time, they are always moving or flying around or interacting with one another), it could be that he is sick. As to the tail, are your birds flighted or do they have their wings clipped?

Then, as long as he is flying strongly, there is no need to worry because the very first symptom you see in a sick bird is weakness in flight - and that's another reason why it's bad to clip!
