I love to give the big cockatoos a whole pumpkin. They have so much fun tearing it open. They seem to enjoy toys/food on the bottom of the cage more than the macaws do.

YES! Wonderful observation, John! Cockatoos are partial ground foragers while macaws are canopy feeders and, even though our birds were born in captivity and do not know about ground foraging or canopy eating, there seems to be some sort of an ancestral memory or a genetic predisposition (preference?) to eating where the species evolved to eat. And so, budgies, tiels, cockatoos, etc like to eat from the ground, conures, macaws, Asian and African parakeets, etc like to eat high up.
