Studies done on sea birds found that they move the start of their migration if a storm is coming or not AND they rerouted their migration when a large storm is approaching even when the storm is far away - but I have observed my 'wild flock' (pigeons, starlings, sparrows, a couple of mourning doves) and, when there is bad storm coming (heavy rain, winds, etc), the pigeons, starlings and the doves are nowhere to be seen hours before the storm hits us but the sparrows always come -maybe because they are tiny and can find shelter more easily or maybe because they have a much faster metabolism and cannot wait hours and hours to eat?
