do you feed your birds peanuts?

Postby Giantmoa » Fri Jul 09, 2010 10:53 pm

I've read conflicting things about the potential health risks of peanuts (mold, ect.) but I still see peanuts sold for birds and wondered if you guys feed your birds them? If they are safe, they seem like something fun to chew open and such...

I do. I buy them and then freeze them till I can use them. That doesn't kill but it does stop the growth process. I'm not certain how safe it is but I haven't yet had problems.

To be safe I only buy human grade roasted, unsalted peanuts from the grocery store. They love them too much for me to give them up entirely.

I dont. First because of the mold risk. Second, they're really fat treats.
We rarely eat them ourselves so we dont have them in home anyway.

Ditto. I just get the Planters unsalted dry-roasted kind. Winnie loves them, but she only gets like 2 a week max.

I don't. Of course they love peanuts, but I just can't take that risk.

Mine eats organic peanut butter occasionally. My friend's Timneh died of eating too much peanuts.
He fed his bird peanuts everyday. The bird showed signs of peanut (mold) poisoning before it died.

I picked up some unsalted, not roasted peanuts at the health food store today. Should I be concerned about mold because they are not roasted? I ate a few myself first, they taste different but good and fresh. I plan to have them as foraging treats along with the sunflower seeds.

I guess it's possible with any nut or seed to occasionally have mold... Wont they just spit them out like we do? Is there any acceptable level of mold they can handle? You know, a lot of homes get mold spores in the air from the basement or other places.
