Is this something to be worried about?

Postby Rrrma » Wed Jul 28, 2010 9:47 pm

Rosie, my eclectus, has recently acquired a new friend whom I noticed does this beak licking/clicking action. It isn't a normal beak grind/click, it is something he does when he gets ready for bed. He licks down the bottom of his beak and then clicks/grinds against the ridge inside, then does it again. Over and over and over and over for a little while. At first I figured it was just his way of getting to sleep... but now Rosie has started doing the same thing.

I just recently found an avian vet near me and I will be taking them in for a checkup, but I can't do it for a while due to recent unforeseen circumstances that has put all my $$ on hold(leaking roof, flooded room, blown power socket, etc :/ ).

I was wondering if this was a sign of anything? Like how toe tapping or wing flapping is. Or is this just a thing they do?

(we recently switched diets as well, trying to do the healthy thing)

Not sure if you are referring to beak grinding but it is basically when they rub the mandible against the maxilla. This is normal and usually a sign of relaxation and contentment.

I'm familiar with the typical beak grinding, this seems to incorporate some serious tongue action, as if they were retasting food.

It does only happen when they are getting ready for bed, maybe she is mimicking him and it has just always been his thing.

My grey parrot does this too, but mostly when he ate something like a nut or fruit or so.
