One of my bubbies is at the vet :(

Postby Rrrma » Thu Aug 05, 2010 9:24 am

Norma(CAG) had a sudden weightloss and discouraging droppings and is currently at the vet being evaluated.

She was rescued from a breeding situation where for 12 of the almost 14 years of her life she has done nothing but been in a cage with males and refuse to be bred. She has been fed a seed mix and vitamin supplement and was surprisingly healthy and well adjusted for her situation, or so I thought.

Since trying to switch her to a healthier diet she has started having very wet dropping(just a LOT of clear liquid along with the normal urates and feces). Then the other day her feces started disappearing between meals. They would be right there after she ate, sometimes loose and sometimes well formed, but then the droppings would be only urates and lots of urine(clear liquid).

She eats fine, she drinks fine, she plays fine, she sleeps fine... I hope it isn't anything serious!

Please keep her in your thoughts.

Hopefully its nothing serious. You did the best thing by getting her to a vet for evaluation.

Hopefully its just something minor. Keep us posted on how she is doing.

I hope she's okay!

But sometimes birds do just 'pee;. My Pi does that fairly often. I just think he plays in his water bowl and drinks a bit more than 'normal'...so sometimes when he goes, it's pretty much 'just' water...

I haven't noticed that with the other two, but the Pi's been doing it all along...

She recently got a water bottle and loooooves it lol. I figured at first that was why she had so much pee, but when the fecal matter got iffy is when I started to worry.

Her name wouldnt be pronounced as pee, would it?
Sorry.

Same here, Kika will have one or two pee-poops out of five, the other being 'normal' poop-poops. The pee-poops can be either completely water, or a litle sliver of white/green in it. The poop-poops are usually a little wet around the edge, but can be rather dry as well. The last ones are easiest to clean of furniture
But if you noticed a difference between the poops on one day and the poops on the other then maybe its not a bad idea to see the vet. Often a change in poo is the only thing alarming us theres something wrong.

Ill keep her in mind and hope theres nothing wrong!

Update:

He thinks it is indeed her diet, as I thought it might be. His initial exam points to not enough fat/protein and too much watery fruits/veggies. He said some birds also like to drink a lot and so they might pee a lot. He did a fecal smear and it was healthy. The bloodwork won't be back until Monday. Hopefully it is all clear.

He suggested I add some more complex carbs and some protein in the form of eggs/cheese/yogurt/chicken bones.

Then I got a surprise phonecall from the man I got her from and I asked him some questions about her diet. She was on a 14/16% fat/protein diet and not very active... so me switching her to a fresh food diet and all the exercise she gets attributes to the weight loss.

So I'll update again when I get the bloodwork back, but I have a good feeling it will be clear :)

I am so glad to hear Norma is ok! It is so stressful when one of our babies is sick...
