Should I just starve her?

Postby notscaredtodance » Sun Aug 08, 2010 7:47 pm

Well that got your attention :D

But this pellet switching is just seeming impossible. She will ONLY eat the bright colored zupreems. She will wait all day and do her little baby bird whining for food "meepmeep. meepmeep. meepmeep." until I give her them.

Her diet isn't that routine. She gets chop almost every day, maybe like 5-6 days a week. If I'm running late I dont give it to her in the morning. Then after I get home she gets fruity pellets when we do training, but again, we dont do training every day. So some days I just give her a handful of them to quiet her.

Maybe once or twice a week I do comfort feedings from a spoon, just because I read an article that said parrots in the wild get comfort fed, every once in a while, until they're a year old, and she's barely a year.

So should I cut out chop, comfort feedings, and fruity pellets and only offer her the harrisons?

I'm not sure how long you've been trying to transition. Here's my advice:

1) Get a scale, figure out pre-existing weights
2) Mix new pellet with old for 2 weeks in progressively favoring ratio
3) Feed new pellet by hand
4) After 2-4 weeks, switch cold turkey

If the Senegal Parrot is eating the new pellets from your hand, it will not starve itself and will start eating it eventually. If the bird refuses the new pellet from your hand no matter what, doing a cold turkey switch may be risky. Definitely track the weight of the bird while you do this entire progress. Once you think your parrot knows about and CAN eat the new pellet. Remove all other things from its diet and wait up to 48 hours before returning old food. However, in the 48 hours you are trying to make the complete switch over, offer the pellets by hand every once in a while in case it is not eating on its own. If your parrot is at a normal healthy weight, 48 hours without food won't kill it. If that doesn't work, I really have nothing else to suggest. Also, I don't think comfort feedings are necessary unless the bird gets really stressed, sick, or some extraordinary circumstance.

Yes that definately got my attention  , you manipulating wench.

Harrisson's advice to me was to switch cold turkey, 'let him starve', was their advice.
Personally, thats not my thing. I've got two different pellets in the cage to see what he likes best and he is begging me for more scenic pellets as we speak. All the tricks in the book are being used.

But that isn't helping you much. I would try the advice Michael gave you. Hopefully that will do the trick.
I heard on a Dutch forum that someones eclectus prefers the harrissons wet. The only problem is that when given wet, the feathers started to go dull again. So probably some of the nutricients will seep out if you do this. But maybe its an idea to get her started.
