Problems with the Uropygial gland

Postby el-parrot » Tue Aug 10, 2010 6:53 pm

Hi all, July 8 I went to my avian vet with my sennie Mickey. She had a huge infection at her coccygeal gland.
This was a photo I took of it, at that time.

I got anti biotics and some gel to treat it, kind of skin soother.

Today I again went to my avian vet Peter. The gland looked more calm, but on the other hand it looked like it has grown and also you'll see a black circle around the gland.
The vet took a biopsi and he will send it to cytology.

After that Tommy, my grey parrot, was next. His beak grows faster lately.

His beak before treatment.

In the end of this week I hope to get the test results.
I really hope everything will be okay.
I have Mickey for 11 years and I love her to death!

Hey. Looks like the infection might be a little deeper than originally thought. Never fear, the gland can actually be removed without adversely affecting the bird so if that has to happen don't worry, all good ;).

Another thing you can do is apply a warm compress to the area, helps with the pain!

Let us know that the cytology results are :senegal:

thanks all!! Hopefully tomorrow or friday I will know the results. Is the correct English word coccygeal gland, actually? I am not sure... used a translating website lol.

Yes.. that is possible, that the infection is deeper. I hope that this is it and not something worse. I don't think she has pain? she acts very healthy and preens a lot etc.. eat well. But I will keep this in mind! thanx :senegal:

My bird vet called last Friday and he told me that it wasn't a tumor. Lucky me and Mickey!!! but the lab said that there was a lot of sebum material and also lots of epithelial cells. He promised me to call the lab. At that day he couldn't reach them anymore. Dunno how to treat Mickey at the moment.... waiting for the vet to call. But it isn't something bad at all aAnd the infection was gone.

Once in two days I can use Avi soother for the gland.

The gland still looks very weird and you can see black skin around it. I made a video today and funniest thing is, she started preening using the gland and in this movie you can see it quite clearly.
