Kim? I emailed dr. Gerry Dorrestein (I know him quite well) and he asked Hedwig to take a look at the photos and guess what? She too has never seen this before and her advise is to make a skin biopt from the black skin around the gland. Tomorrow I am going to make an appointment for this at Peter Bastiaansen. Keep you posted.

That definitely looks like a chronic impaction of the uropygial gland to me, of course, I'm making a diagnosis based on a photo without seeing the bird but that would be my first differential. Sometimes the only treatment is to remove the gland, especially if hot packing and manual "milking" the gland isnt working and the problem keeps recurring. They aren't always infected hence why biopsies are probably non-diagnostic.

Go back and check that link you posted earlier, it describes the condition quite well there.

Hope it all works out for your little fid :senegal:
